SYNOPSIS
The open source movement has been around since 1998. Before that it was largely known as free software. Open standards have been around for as long as bodies have existed – think your electrical plugs for instance. Today, basic services we take for granted, like email and web browsing are completely based on open standards.
Entrepreneurs around the world are starting up today, leveraging open source to go to market faster. Upon getting established, they take it up a notch and present the data in forms of open standards. This helps keep their platform ubiquitous. Ubiquity after all is a great measure of success.
From Twitter, to Facebook, down to Google and Yahoo – these companies all use open source software to build their powerhouses. The ubiquity comes later with APIs – some of which become open standards as adoption increases. Facebook Connect, Twitter’s use of oAuth, OpenID – these are just examples of open login mechanisms available today.
Does open source mean you will not make a business or any money out of it? That depends. Many people sell their service and support as a value added service on top of the open source software. A few examples include Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, Workflow Management System, Content Management Systems (CMS), just to name a few.
Are you embracing open source and open standards to take your business to the next level?
Come and get an overview here. It will be a spread spectrum discussion, and based on interaction, we can have more targeted, niche sessions.
See you there!
